How Long Does SMP Last?

The studio's SMP maintenance and refresh guidance is 4–5 years, not a guaranteed duration. Timing varies with skin, sun exposure and aftercare. Routine refreshes are separate from the existing complimentary minor refinement within 12 months of the final scheduled session.
Routine refresh work is planned after assessment of the existing pigment and coverage; it is not the same as minor refinement after the initial course.
Why SMP fades at all
Pigment is placed deliberately shallow, at roughly 0.6–0.8 mm, to keep each impression follicle-sized. That shallow placement is what keeps SMP looking real — and it is also why it is semi-permanent rather than permanent. Skin renews, and pigment particles are slowly cleared.
What makes it fade faster
- Sun exposure — by far the largest factor in Los Angeles
- Oily skin types, which process pigment more quickly
- Strong exfoliants, retinols and acids used on the scalp
- Frequent swimming in chlorinated water
- Pigment placed too shallow or under-saturated in the original work
How to make it last in LA
Use SPF 30+ on the scalp daily once healed, keep exfoliating actives away from the treated area, moisturise lightly to reduce shine, and book a refresh when you notice the tone has lifted rather than waiting until it looks thin.
Refresh timing varies with skin, sun exposure and aftercare; the studio uses 4–5 years as guidance, not a promise.
Our 12-month guarantee
Every Scalp Aesthetic Studio treatment includes complimentary minor refinement within 12 months of your final scheduled session, so healing variation is corrected without extra cost.

Does SMP need annual touch-ups?
Not as a routine requirement. The studio uses 4–5 years as general SMP refresh guidance; your needs are assessed individually. Quick Density is a separate service with 2–3-month maintenance guidance.
How long does a touch-up take?
Usually a single session of one to three hours, depending on the treated area.
Will it fade unevenly?
Well-placed work fades evenly in tone. Uneven fading is a sign of inconsistent depth during the original sessions.
Is a refresh cheaper than a first treatment?
Refreshes are significantly shorter than an initial course. Our Los Angeles consultation covers exact planning for your case.
